Ball Gown on the Horizon!

While looking for inspiration for a new gown to wear to PEERS and Gaskells, I was reminded of how much I've always loved the dress Deborah Kerr wore in 'The King and I' during the famous "Shall we dance?" number.

It's so magnificent and ridiculously huge, with lots of details I didn't notice until getting into costuming, such as the tulle sleeve overlays with crystals, and the bertha with the huge bows. Plus the fabulous snood she is wearing.

My version will be a lot less grand, but a nice change after wearing blue cotton, I think. :D I have some nice golden taffeta snagged from a garage sale dirt cheap, as duchess satin or whatever hers is made of is a bit over my budget.

Secret of Moonacre - Maria's Red Gown

Propstore has been selling costumes from the Childrens Fantasy film, the Secret of Moonacre, and I was struck by this red gown.

Any ideas about the fabric? The texture is awesome, and I love how the pearls are splayed across the bodice. This dress is on my too-make list, maybe next year for a Gaskells or PEERS event.

Welcome to Buttons and Bows, my Costume blog!

Okay, I've never blogged before, this should be interesting. I will be mostly posting my costumes, dress diaries, photos, pattern reviews, and whatever else comes up. Please bear with me, I have zero experience in this area, and if it doesn't work out...... we'll see.
